História
Por volta de 2000 a.c. o território foi invadido e ocupado pelos Meroítas, que haviam vivido um século no Egipto.
Os Romanos, nos primeiros anos antes de cristo, tomaram a sua capital e dominaram o país. Imperando em Bizâncio Justiniano I,o Sudão foi cristianizado, e no século VI havia já no território vários reinos cristãos, entre os quais o de Dongola.
No século XV este reino foi conquistado pelo de Fonji, do vale do rio Azul, islamizado e com a capital em Sanar.
Em 1820, o Egipto, como província do IMpério Otomano, tomou o país, que passou a ser conhecido por Sudão Egípcio.
Mais tarde, quando o Egipto se transformou em protectorado britânico, a Inglaterra deu certa autonomia ao Sudão, que passou a ser designado por Sudão Anglo-Egípcio.
Em 1881 iniciou-se o movimento pró-islâmico e antibritânico do Mahdi, que conseguiu tomar Cartum.
Apesar de o Madhi ter morrido em 1882, o Sudão continuou autónomo até 1898.
Nesta data, a Inglatrerra reconquistou o Sudão e proclamou a região condomínio anglo-egípcio.
Durante a II Guerra Mundial surgiu o problema da independência.
O Sudão, depois de uma fase de governo autônomo em 1956 tornou-se independente, proclamando-se uma república democrática e parlamentar.
Em 19 de Janeiro entrou para a Liga dos Estados Árabes e em 12 de Novembro para a ONU.
A vida política do novo país começou sob o signo da instabilidade. O Sul do país, africano tanto nas suas etnias como nas suas crenças e produtos, em forte contraste com o Norte, árabe e islamizado, teve efeitos decisivos nos destinos do Sudão.
O general Ibrahim Abbud apoderou-se do Poder em 1958. A política de islamização gerou um movimento de revolta.
Após o abandono do general Abbud (1964), as eleições e o parlamentarismo não resolveram a instabilidade insurreccional. Um golpe militar, em 1969, leva o general Nimeyri a chefe de Estado e primeiro-ministro.
Apoiado por socialistas, comunistas e sindicatos, nacionaliza os bancos e as companhias britânicas, e reforça os laços de amizade com os países socialistas. Escapa a vários atentados (1969 e 1970) e em começos de 1971 anuncia a criação de um partido único, de que fica chefe, a União Socialista Sudanesa.
Deposto por um golpe militar pró-comunista (1971), conseguiu retomar o poder. Foi eleito Presidente da República e alcança um acordo, em 27.3.1972, com a guerrilha.
Nimeyrin adoptara então uma política pró-ocidental e de aproximação preferencial com os países árabes moderados, sem deixar de buscar ajuda tanto na China como na União Soviética (1972), ao mesmo tempo que se reconciliava com Egipto em 1973.
A Constituição de 1973 consagrou o sistema de partido único e de autonomia para as províncias do Sul. Entretanto ocorrem sucessivos golpes militares falhados (Janeiro de 72, Outubro de 73, em 75, 76 e em 1981), após os quais houve depurações, sendo ferozes as que se seguiram a 1976.
A 9.8.1976, Nimeyri cedeu a chefia do Governo, e viu-se reeleito Presidente da República a 3.4.1977.
Socialista à maneira de Nasser, apoiou-se nos países árabes anticomunistas. Ao mesmo tempo, sonhando fazer do mar Vermelho um Mara árabe, auxiliou tanto os rebeldes da Eritreia como os movimentos hostis ao Governo Etíope.
Em 1983, o país fica oficialmente sob a lei islâmica.
Em 1985, Mohamed Taha, dirigente do movimento islâmico dos Irmãos Republicanos e opositor ao integrismo, foi executado.
Em Abril, Nimeyri visita os EUA, quando se desencadeia uma rebelião encabeçada pelo general Rahman Sewer el-Dahab.
Elementos do exército ocupam então os lugares de chefia e o movimento vitorioso promete uma carta de unidade nacional e uma política externa de não alinhamento.
Entretanto, desde 1983, a fome tinha vitimado mortalmente cerca de ¼ de milhão de sudaneses.
Em 1987, reacende-se o conflito étnico no Sul, opondo as tribos nilóticas árabes (nuer, fertit, mundari) aos negros (dinka), cristãos e animistas. O líder John Garang, ocupa faixas de três províncias do Sul.
A determinação dos rebeldes em encerrar o espaço aéreo sublevado pôs termo às ajudas dos organismos internacionais.
No fim de Junho de 1989, uma junta militar presidida pelo general Omar Hassan el-Béchir depôs o primeiro-ministro Sadek el-Madhi.
Foi deliberada a suspensão da constituição provisória e a dissolução da Assembleia Constituinte, do Conselho de Ministros e do Conselho Superior de Soberania, assim como de todos os partidos e associações de carácter não religioso.
Béchir é reconduzido em 1993, ano em que o Sudão foi visitado pelo Papa João Paulo II.
Continuam a fome e a guerra, apesar de a queda de Mengistu, na Etiópia, ter privado os rebeldes de um importante apoio.Entretanto, o movimento de guerrilha engrossou: ao combate pela ab-rogação da lei islâmica seguiu.se a reinvidicação de autonomia territorial.
Sucedem-se tentativas vãs de estabelecer a paz.
Em 1995, o Sudão é acusado de envolvimento no atentado contra o presidente do Egipto, Mubarak, e de proteger o terrorismo internacional.
